Treetable LLC- Colorado
Primary Project Area: San Luis Valley
Farmers and ranchers over 65, now outnumber farmers under 35 by more than 6 to1.This puts our agricultural system and the ability to feed people of the United States at risk as farmers and ranchers retire without a successor in place.
In the past, San Luis Valley was the agricultural center of Colorado. However, after years of intensive agriculture the soil is depleted in many areas. This area also used to be an epicenter for the use of native plants in medicine and food. Areas like “La Botanica'' in La Jara Creek were used by the local hispanic and Native American populations (Comanches, Navajos and Utes) to collect medicinal plants. After the introduction of sheep, La Botanica has now deteriorated. Without people being able to learn about and connect with agricultural production and the plants around them, our farming population will age out of existence, we will loose knowledge of our native plants and we will not be able to find new farmers.
Treetable LLC is on a mission to change this, starting with our 120 acres in Moffat, Colorado.
Native plants help us to regenerate the soil of our area. People can come and pick wildflowers at our farm. We are currently researching viable medicinal and edible for the commercialization of these plants. Our plants bring various fauna to the area, including the bees that we maintain on site.
Our operation uses the latest technology. We have various sensors on site that feed data to a central processing unit. This unit is a super computer designed to interpret this data and find solutions to help us regenerate faster.
With the Crestone Needle and Great Sand Dunes close to the farm. We have plenty of guests that come to stay. While they are here they learn about how we do agriculture.
